ATA students and instructors will wear only the traditional, all-white Taekwondo uniform. The traditional uniform has a wrapped jacket top and plain trousers which are secured at the waist by drawstring or elastic. No other fastenings, pockets, trademarks, emblems, or other non-standard features are allowed.

The ATA patch will be worn on the upper right side of the jacket front. The approved school patch may be worn on the upper left side of the jacket front. No other patches are allowed except for those from ATA Headquarters for special national programs. Patches must be stitched on all sides, and not used as a pocket.

Black Belt students, beginning with the First Degree Decided rank, wear 1" black trim around the bottom of the uniform jacket. The stripe should follow the hem, including the side vents. The trim must be on the 1st Degree's uniform before they take their first midterm testing.

Certified Instructors will wear a black stripe on the collar of the uniform jacket. The Chief & Head Certified Instructors will wear a 1 1/2" black collar stripe. Other certified instructors will wear a 1" black collar stripe. Trainee Instructors wear a 1" red collar stripe. Certified Trainee Instructors wear a 1" red/black collar stripe. A special red/white/blue stripe is also worn by young people in the Junior Instructor Program. These stripes may not be applied to the uniform without official written permission of National Headquarters.

Because of the design of the uniform, it is possible to buy a child's uniform in a size that is slightly large, to allow for some growing room. However, the sleeves and pants must be altered to the correct length by sewing a deep hem. The sleeve should be no longer than the wrist bone, and the trouser hems should be no longer than the ankle bone.

The uniform is a reflection of a student's personal pride and respect for his school and art. Uniforms should always be white, clean, and pressed. Chlorine bleach will discolor the fabric. Uniforms are most safely washed in cool water and drip dried. A uniform should be considered dress clothing; it should not be frayed or torn. Sleeves and pant legs should hang freely, not rolled or pushed up. Correct uniform is required of all students in class, testings and tournaments.

Appropriate Dress

  • Class uniforms should be neat and tidy.

  • For regular classes on Monday through Friday, complete, clean uniforms must be worn unless special permission is given by an instructor.(See Calendar)

  • For Saturday classes, the following is appropriate: Taekwondo baggies or uniform bottoms and plain white, plain black, or Taekwondo T-shirt.

  • During time periods designated as "summer uniform" times, the summer uniform consists of the regular taekwondo uniform pants, belt, an an ATA school or tournament t-shirt. If a student does not have an ATA t-shirt, they may purchase one at the counter or they may wear their regular uniform jacket.

  • Jewelry is not to be worn during class or testings (wedding bands are the only exception).

  • Hair should be pulled back and neatly groomed.

  • Black Belts should dress in business casual or in uniform for all ATA events.

  • Instructors should be in the appropriate suits or Instructor workout uniform.
