Stripe System
Between belts, students are given the opportunity to earn stripes on their belt as they gain knowledge for their rank. Stripes are given for learning, memorizing, and performing the physical as well as the mental themes (i.e. Respect, Courtesy, Self Control, etc.). Earning 3 stripes on the left side of your belt qualifies you for rank promotion. Be sure to check with an instructor for the specific requirements for this testing cycle. 1st Stripe = Knowledge Stripe
...earned at the end of week 2 for memorization of student's form, one-steps and self defense. Black Belt Club & Master Club students must also memorize their weapon and breaking requirements. The student's technique doesn't have to be good to get this stripe, but they need to have the sequence of techniques memorized.
2nd Stripe = Attitude Stripe
...earned at the end of week 4 for demonstration of good life skills. These may include respect, courtesy, self control, confidence, perseverence, etc. Students must turn in a letter of recommendation citing specific reasons for receiving this stripe.
3rd Stripe = Performance Stripe
...earned at the end of week 6 for demonstration of good quality attributes. These include memorization, eye contact, proper execution, balance, speed, power, rhythm and automatic reflex. Each week the curriculum focuses on one of these physical attributes, so it is very important to attend classes regularly.
The stripe that some students wear on the right side of theif belt is called a "decided" stripe. There are 2 ranks at each belt color, recommended rank and decided rank. The decided stripe is received based on the student's performance at testing. Most beginner and intermediate ranks skip the 1st(recommended) rank and go to the 2nd (decided) rank within each color. At blue belt, each student progresses through each of the two ranks within each color.
