Class and Student Courtesy

Taekwondo places a very important emphasis on traditional courtesy and established procedures. Here are some standard courtesies that may be unfamiliar to new students. They help make our Taekwondo school a special place of respect and personal discipline.

In order to be comfortable and knowledgeable with the courtesies expected, all students should review the following list:

1. Students and instructors will bow to the flags each time they enter and/or leave the classroom area, even if the area is not being used for workout. (The bow is the Oriental "handshake" used in showing respect and feeling of community toward the flags, fellow students and instructors).

2. If a student is unavoidably tardy for class, he should bow at the edge of the workout floor and wait to be recognized by the instructor; he/she may then ask permission to join the class. (Instructors may choose to assign warm-ups and/or other exercises as appropriate)

3. Students should use the restroom before coming to class. If necessary, it is acceptable during class to ask permission to be excused.

4. Students will respond "Yes/No, Sir" or "Yes/No, Ma'am", as appropriate, in all conversations with instructors; students will stand respectfully and bow whenever greeting an instructor, in or out of the classroom.

5. Students will address instructors by their last name and proper title (Mr., Mrs., Miss, etc.), regardless of any personal or family relationship.

6. Students are encouraged to participate in class enthusiastically; however, students should avoid unnecessary conversation and should speak only at the proper times.

7. If a student does not understand a directive, he should raise his hand and ask that the instruction be repeated. A student is expected, however, to pay careful attention so the class may proceed without interruption.

8. The Senior student among students of the same rank is the one who achieved the rank first. If the rank was earned at the same time, seniority may be determined by length of time in Taekwondo or by chronological age. An instructor may also prefer to "rotate" the senior position.

9. No student, regardless of rank, may instruct or correct another student without the direct and specific permission of the instructor.

10. A student's personal appearance in the class is a reflection of his pride. Cleanliness of person and uniform is imperative.

11. If a student is in the room when the "Songahm Spirit of Taekwondo" pledge is recited, he must stand at attentions and recite the pledge with the group, whether or not he is in uniform or a participant in the group session.

12. There is to be no smoking or use of tobacco products in the school at any time; there will be no smoking, use of tobacco products or consumption of alcohol at any time while in uniform.

13. There will be no use of profanity on the school premises or at any ATA function, class or activity.

14. Permission of the student's instructor is required before any student may attend another ATA school or another martial arts school.

15. High ranking visitors to the class should be greeted with appropriate respect; if class is in session, it should immediately be interrupted for this salutation.

16. Students will turn away from the instructor, opponent or flags when adjusting uniform or belt.

17. Students will not wear shoes on the workout floor without permission from instructors.

18. Students, parents and guests will not converse with any person involved in a class session without the permission of the instructor.

19. No student may work on forms or techniques of any rank higher than his own.

20. Even students not taking class stop, stand and observe silence during the bowing in and bowing out pledges of the current class.

21. When first seeing one's instructor in the Taekwondo school on a given day, it is traditional to stop and bow.

22. Instructors and Black Belts are addressed by Mr. _____ and Ms. ______. Sir and Ma'am are used by all students when speaking to juniors, seniors, Black Belts and Instructors.

23. Voices should be kept low in the dressing rooms and the sitting area.

24. Extremely polite manners, language, and actions are always expected in the Taekwondo school.

25. If you have any Taekwondo problems or concerns, you should schedule an appointment to meet with a member of the staff. You can schedule an appointment at the counter.

26. Students should not free spar, break boards, or use training equipment without the instructors permission.

27. There should at no time be profanity, coarseness, or derogatory remarks in the Taekwondo school by ANY age student. Remember that the adult students must set a good example for the younger ones to follow.

28. Remember at all times that comments in a Taekwondo school should be positive and supportive of fellow students, whether juniors or seniors.

Did You Know?

  • All students need to BE ON TIME for classes!! Being late can be disruptive to the student as well as the rest of the class and the instructors. Being punctual is part of discipline.

  • All Junior and Adult students need to pull their attendance card from the attendance card rank prior to the start of class.

  • Students should not be left at the school more than 10 minutes before their scheduled class times. Junior students should be picked up promptly at the end of their class. The school staff cannot be responsible for children left in the school an excessive period of time before or after their scheduled class. We also cannot allow students to wait outside for their ride for safety reasons. Please check your schedule for the correct time of your classes.

  • Parents and other spectators need to be seated in the lobby or designated areas of workout floor. Sitting in the workout area makes it difficult and hazardous for students and staff. For their own safety, children not in class should not be on the workout floor. They, too, need to be seated.

  • Girls and ladies are required to wear a plain WHITE t-shirt underneath their uniform. Boys are not required to wear t-shirts, but if they do, please be sure that it is white as well. All t-shirts must be tucked in and no shirt tail should be visable under the uniform jacket.

  • To avoid possible injury to the student and others, jewelry (watches, rings, bracelets and earrings) are not to be worn in class (the only exception is a smooth-edged wedding band).

  • All shoes, socks, etc. should be placed in the dressing rooms or in sparring gear bags, not in the entrance to the workout floor.

  • Students may purchase lettered school uniforms at any time. There is no certain rank required to wear this uniform. It is recommended that brown belts and above have a lettered uniform. Only those who are members of the leadership team are allowed to have their names on their backs.

  • We have special events, testing dates, extra clinics and other important information posted on the monthly calendar, the bulletin board, and the school website.

  • We offer private 30 minute lessons for all students for a nominal fee. These are excellent to help a student that has missed classes or to prepare a student for a tournament or testing.

  • The belt order for rank goes as follows: white, orange, yellow, camouflage, green, purple, blue, brown, red, Recommended Black (red/black), and Black Belt. There are nine (9) degrees of Black Belt (1st thru 9th Degree Grand Master).

  • Students MUST receive a testing permission slip from an instructor in order to test for the next rank. The time that any student tests for his/her next rank is at the discretion of the instructors and will be based on each students individual progress, class attendance, and what is best for the student.

  • All dues must be current in order to be eligible to test for the next rank.

  • All students are required to have full sparring gear at the camo belt level (earlier if they are Black Belt Club Members). This is for their protection as well as the other students. Required gear includes headgear, hand pads, foot pads, chest protector, and mouthpiece for all students. All male students are required to wear a cup and supporter. All gear is available for sale at our school.

  • Sparring gear bags should be placed along the back wall under the windows. They should not be placed in the entrance to the workout floor, near any doorways, or under the attendance card rack. This is to ensure safety for students and staff moving around the school.

  • Black Belts and Leadership Club members ONLY are allowed to wear black sparring gear. AIl other students must wear red sparing gear.

  • The school policies are set down to aid in the progress and development of our students and are enforced solely for their benefit end safety.
